The photobook was released in two editions in Russian and English. At the moment, the book is represented in the fund of the MMOMA educational center and in a number of foreign and Russian stores and galleries.

The book was shortlisted for the PhotoESPAÑA award “Best Photobook of 2023” and received the silver medal of the PX3 Award in 2024.

The project tells about the territorial conflict between the needs of urban development and the needs of a large municipal shelter accommodating several thousand animals. When forming the final sequence, the author gave place to three separate layers-characters that coexist in the shooting space: the city, the dogs and the community of volunteers. These characters are collective, while at the same time possessing a well-defined subjectivity, which causes a conflict of interests. Choosing the shape of the photos for each “character” partly sets a certain scenario for viewing the book.

For the “Dog” character, the photographs were selected and staged to emphasize the anthropomorphism of the animals, show their emotions and state the circumstances of their existence.

For the “City” character, the photos move across the border of the page to the next one, thus emphasizing the expanding boundaries of the agglomeration and the, that this particular “character” is geographically dominant and not constrained. The “City” is also allocated a place in the booklet insert at the beginning of the book, which contains background information about the shelter.

The character “Volunteers” is represented in the weakest position, there are practically no people in the pictures, but there are traces of their presence. An important part of the presence of this “character” are excerpts from the volunteer forum on the front flap of the cover, which at the same time serve as an entrance to the book, briefly describing details about the life of the shelter. The text for the valve is by its nature a “snapshot” of the forum — it was copied without looking and at random from a random page.

The book also contains a QR code with a link to a recording of dogs barking in the territory.

Photobook “Life is still a garden, don’t say otherwise” 2026

In my garden, images of my past are layered with a vivid sense of the present, which will also leave, forming a new layer of memory.

From inside the “garden” it turns out to look at the world differently. Inside this space, real or imagined, we act according to special rituals.

For me, the “garden” is strongly connected with the images of memory from childhood, but at the same time it is a place of formation of future memories, where both adults and children can return to feel safe again and look at the world from this position.
